The Start of the Triangle Journey

Miles: 364

Here we go again.  Today marks the start of our “Triangle Journey” from Mesa to Florida to Pennsylvania to Indiana to Colorado and back to home.  We are planning for about 6  on the road golfing our way across the US.  There are plans to visit with friends (Jack and Fran Tassos in Florida), our friends Trish and Tom in NJ, Rich’s mom in PA and my mom and dad in Evansville.  Whew!  Welcome along on our ride.

Today’s travel was a relatively short trip from Mesa to Las Cruces, NM.  This is a route we have traveled previously and it is quite a beautiful trip.

I hit up the gym, we packed the car and were off around 10:00am.  By the time I started to get hungry we were literally in the middle of nowhere.  We had vowed to try and eat healthy during this trip and it is already difficult when the choices are between KFC and McDonald’s.

It was getting on towards 2:00pm when we came to the little town of Duncan, NM.  There was a small cafe there that was attached to a mini-market.  The decision was made to just get something to snack on and then have an early dinner in Las Cruces.  I picked up an apple and some popcorn (lunch of champions) and Rich choose some kind of orange freezy thing.

This is lunch?

We were partially satisfied and motored on to Las Cruces.  Rich was tasked with finding us a place for dinner in Las Cruces so I would have something to look forward to.

We checked in to what appeared to be a brand new Comfort Suites (free night courtesy of Choice Privileges points) and brought just enough stuff up to the room to cover our needs for the night and morning.

When we figured out that we had lost an hour due to the time zone, we figured we might as well go ahead and go to dinner – we are starving.  Rich chose the St. Clair Winery and Bistro.  Turned out to be absolutely fantastic!  He and Isam had shared a bottle of St. Clair Pinot Grigio during their bike ride so he was a bit familiar with their wines.

Our server was great and helped us choose a couple glasses of wine that we really enjoyed.  We both ordered salads with grilled salmon.  Rich wins for having pecans on his spinach salad.  Those pecans were some of the best we had ever tasted.  Seriously.

Back to the Comfort Suites to crash and burn.  The plan is to get up and hit the Fitness Center here.  Let’s see if that actually happens.

Tomorrow we head to Ruidoso to golf and then spend the night in Roswell.  I hope I can find a restaurant to at least halfway keep up with what Rich found today…l

Thanks for joining us on this venture.  Should prove to have some interesting moments.  We will keep our loyal readers posted.
